Earth Rangers supports the work of young researchers through the Earth Rangers Wildlife Adoption Program.
The purchase of each animal adoption kit ($45), which includes:
- A plush animal
- A certificate
- A poster
…results in a direct donation to protecting that species.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Recognize that changes in habitats impact animals
- Relate conservation projects to improved habitat health
DURING THIS ACTIVITY, STUDENTS WILL:
- Review different types of threats to wildlife
- Explain how conservation projects can help animals
- Collaborate to support these efforts
GRADE LEVEL: K-6
YOUR MISSION
Support wildlife conservation by adopting a class mascot!
Discussion Questions
Engage students in a discussion using the following questions as a guide:
- What do you think are some of the challenges wildlife face? (Habitat, food sources, etc.)
- How do you think people can help protect animals?
Ask students what they remember from the Earth Rangers assembly about Geraldo and the Sea Turtle Protection Project in Nicaragua. (They watch over beaches, protect sea turtle nests, and care for eggs in special nurseries until the baby turtles are ready to go into the wild).
Wildlife Conservation Explained
Define wildlife conservation for students:
Wildlife conservation means protecting animals, plants, and their homes to keep nature safe and healthy.
ACTIVITY STEPS
- Explain that there are many people like Geraldo who are taking action to help protect wildlife species and habitats.
- Explore the various projects Earth Rangers is involved in from the Animal Adoption list.
- Adopt Your Class Mascot!
- Vote on an animal that best represents your class.
-
Decide on a fundraising plan so you can adopt it, such as:
- $2 donation from each student
- A bake sale
- A recycling drive
- A talent show or an art show with a donation box
-
Once you have fundraised and adopted your animal, have the class share information about their mascot with the school community, such as:
- What are some of the biggest threats to the animal?
- What are researchers doing to help?
- Send us a picture of your class with their mascot!
