Finding the caribou!
During the migrations of the Porcupine Caribou herd, hundreds of caribou move together across hundreds of kilometers.
Recently, however, there have been changes to their routes. The Van Tat Gwich’in community of Old Crow, Yukon has been impacted by these changes. Gwich’in Land Guardians have invited researchers to join them in tracking the caribou to understand what is happening.
Based on this real-world situation and developed for Grades 5 and 6, this hands-on activity is curriculum-linked and an engaging way to introduce students to animal tracking, the value of two-eyed seeing for data collection and interpretation, as well as the importance of local conversation projects.
Students will:
- Participate in an hands-on outdoor tracking activity using ArcGIS mapping software
- Interpret collected data by combining Indigenous traditional knowledge and western science
- Learn about the impact of human activity and climate change on migration patterns in a real- world situation
- Support conservation efforts by participating in a fun action project
All participating classes will be sent a full activity package including with access to ArcGIS mapping, clear instructions, videos and fun quizzes.
