Adopt a Class Mascot

Support wildlife conservation by adopting a class mascot!

Grade level: K-6

Learning Objective:
– Recognize that changes in habitats impact animals
– Relate conservation projects to improved habitat health


During this activity, students will:
– Review different types threats to wildlife
– Explain how conservation projects can help animals
– Collaborate to support these efforts

Earth Rangers supports the work of young researchers through the Earth Rangers Wildlife Adoption Program. The purchase of each animal adoption kit results in a direct donation to protecting that species.

Instructions

  1. Ask students what they know about wildlife conservation.
    • Wildlife conservation explained to kids: Wildlife conservation means protecting
      animals, plants, and their homes to keep nature safe and healthy.
  2. Engage students in a discussion using the following questions as a guide:
    • What do you think are some of the challenges wildlife face? (Habitat, food sources, etc.)
    • How do you think people can help protect animals?
  3. Explain that there are many researchers who do work to better understand the threats facing wildlife and help protect species and habitats. Look for a way to support conservation researchers, such as adopting an animal through the various projects Earth Rangers is involved (Animal Adoption list)
  4. Vote on an animal that best represents your class. Then, decide on a fundraising plan so you can adopt it, such as:
    • Toonie donations by class members
    • A bake sale
    • A bottle drive
    • A talent show or an art show with a donation box
  5. Once you have fundraised and adopted your animal, have the class share information about their mascot with the school community, such as what are some of the biggest threats to the animal and what researchers are doing to help.
  6. Send us a picture of your class with their mascot!
